St Peter’s 200 year anniversary

Throughout 2024 we are celebrating 200 years of St Peter’s Church in Stanley. We hope you will join us for some of these events:

  • The Path of Prayer Labyrinth on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th May is an in-door walking path that takes us on a spiritual and personal journey, encouraging us at each turn to think about God, pray and reflect. See page 10 for full details.
  • The Summer Gala on Saturday 29th June, 1pm—4pm will include a variety of refreshments and stalls, both inside and outside on the field. There will also be a display of photos and other memorabilia of the church over the years. Please contact us if you have any pictures, photos, books or other items that you would be happy for us to borrow.
  • Concert Band & Cream tea afternoon, Saturday 13th July. We will be welcoming Morley & District Concert Band to our cream tea afternoon on the church field. It should be a wonderful afternoon of refreshments and music!
  • Flower festival and Celebration weekend, Friday 6th—Sunday 8th September. Following the recent announcement that Bishop Tony will be retiring this summer, we are delighted that the Bishop of Leeds, Nick Baines, will be coming to our 10am service instead. The original St Peter’s church was opened on 6th September 1824, before it was greatly damaged by the 1911 fire. During the weekend we will also be having a flower festival and other activities.

Stained glass window restoration

During the year we hope to restore our stained glass window and have it ready in time for the service on 8th September. Donations towards this are very welcome. The total cost of restoring the window is around £1,500 and about half of this has already been pledged. A full pane of glass can be sponsored in memory of a loved one, at a cost of £250. Please call in or contact the church office if you would like to make a donation.

Please join us during our busy year of celebrations! We are looking forward to celebrate 200 years of St Peter’s church alongside our wonderful community of Stanley!
