Wednesday 1st Aug 2007
10am-1pm

National Playday event at Stanley playground. Lots of activities.

To join in with the National Playday on Wednesday 1st August, there will be a Funday event from 10am-1pm in Stanley playground, hosted by Friends of Stanley Playground and The 2 O'clock Club, the out-door based children's activity group who meet in the playground on Mondays.

It looks like being a very enjoyable day. There will be street games organised by David Hennessey, our local registered children’s fitness instructor, Punch and Judy shows, face painting, skittles, marbles, street football, messy play, fence decorating and numerous crafts for the children to have a go at, as well as the playground to play in. We are hoping that people will bring a picnic along, (and maybe a teddy bear) and join in the fun. All the activities are free; our aim is purely to raise awareness of our plans for the playground and to have fun. Children must be accompanied by an adult in order to take part in the craft activities and street games. Please dress for mess!!

Stanley Starlights: 'Top of the Twirlers'
The Wakefield Express recently reported that the Stanley Starlights have been named "UK Troupe of the Year". The announcement was made a few weeks ago and the good news comes just months after three of the troupe had been selected to perform at the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics.

The Stanley Starlights won the "British Isles Baton Twirling Association UK" and "Northern Troupe of the Year" awards. In addition, their trainer, Becky Richardson, was also given the "UK Trainer of the Year" award. She told the newspaper that "It's my first award as a trainer and it was a total shock. It still hasn't sunk in yet. I think my secret is that I’m friends with all the girls and because I was a majorette, I know how to approach them."

Becky's Mum, Donna Richardson, originally founded the group and said "It's great for them to see that other professionals appreciate their talents".

The troupe was formed in 1991 and celebrates 16 years of baton twirling this June. Mrs Richardson told the Wakefield Express about the secret to their success. She said "It has to be teamwork, because if you don't have that, you've got no chance. The girls always pull together, even when new members join. We've even got a few two–year-olds in our troupe which shows how welcome everyone is made to feel"

Anyone interested in joining the majorette group should contact 01924 824497 after 4pm.
