Summer Gala - Saturday 28th June 2008, 1pm-4pm

St Peter’s Church Centre, Lake Lock Rd

The annual St Peter’s Summer Gala was held on Saturday 28th June in the field next to the Church Centre.  The event raised £2,781 for church funds which makes it the most successful gala so far.  There was a wonderful atmosphere during the day, and everyone seemed to have a great time, browsing the stalls and watching the various entertainment.  A huge number of people came and the organisers were delighted and very grateful that so many people from the local community came along to support the event.

Fortunately the rain stayed away, but nevertheless all the stalls were protected by gazebos: many thanks to everyone who put them up and then took them down again at the end of the day.  Thanks also to those who cleared the ground of litter the evening before and sorted out all the items that had been donated.

Fun at the Gala

The gala was officially opened at 1pm by Rt Revd Tony Robinson, the Bishop of Pontefract.  There were lots of stalls to visit: tombola, cakes, books, face painting, toys, bric-a-brac, crafts, children’s tombola, sweets, ‘name the doll’, bottle tombola, flower arrangements, beads, goldfish game, accessories, greetings cards and plants.  The face painting stand was very popular and the team doing the face painting produced some wonderful, novel designs.

The ‘Welcome Tent’ with its leaflets and posters about church groups and activities was popular, especially as it gave out little boxes of sweets to everyone!  Refreshments included a BBQ, pop and crisps, and cream teas.

During the afternoon, spectators were treated to some fantastic entertainment in the central arena: the Stanley Starlights Majorettes, the Christine Popple School of Dance, and the always popular Normanton Dog Training Club who gave a wonderful demonstration of dog obedience, agility and ingenuity.

The Grand Raffle was a considerable success and raised £930.  Many thanks to everyone who bought and sold the tickets.

All prize winners have now been contacted.  Many thanks to the local businesses and individuals who donated prizes: the Co-Op store in Stanley, the Thatched House pub, ‘Blades’ hairdressers, Kev’s fish shop, Butterfly Beauty Salon, Lilac Beauty Salon, the Café on Lime Pit Lane, and the Corner shop
in Stanley.  Thanks also to John Janusz, the manager of the Co-op supermarket in Outwood who permitted us to sell tickets there.

Special thanks to Nestle Confectionery UK and Coca Cola Enterprises for their generous donation of confectionery and cans of drinks which contributed greatly to the success of the gala.

The whole gala was a very happy and successful event.  A huge thank-you goes to all the organisers, stall-holders, and above all, everyone who came along and supported the event.
