Summer Gala - Saturday 24th June 2006, 1pm-4pm

St Peter’s Church Centre, Lake Lock Rd

The annual St Peter’s Summer Gala was held on Saturday 24th June in the field next to the Church Centre.  It was a very happy and successful event and raised £2,548 for church funds.  There was a wonderful atmosphere during the day, and everyone seemed to have a great time, browsing the stalls and watching the various entertainment.  A huge number of people came—more than last year it appeared—and the organisers were delighted and very grateful that so many people from the local community came along to support the event.

Despite a heavy shower of rain in the morning whilst the stalls were being set up, the weather in the afternoon was nearly perfect: warm, dry and still.  The grounds at the Church Centre looked very attractive, with bunting strung along the trees, and gazebos erected over each of the stalls.  Many thanks to everyone who gave their time to clear the field of rubbish
beforehand and afterwards, and particularly to
the Scouts and the stall holders who worked so tirelessly to set all the stalls up and to take everything down again afterwards.

There were lots of stalls to browse amongst: cakes, bottle tombla, toys, raffle, tombola, bric-a-brac, books, sweets, plants, jewellery, ‘guess the football team’, and face painting.  New this year were a nearly-new clothes stall and henna painting, which was particularly popular with the teenagers.  Refreshments included a BBQ, pop and crisps, and cream teas.

The gala was officially opened at 1pm by Ed Balls MP who spent time visiting all the stalls and talking to lots of his constituents.  During the afternoon, the spectators were treated to lots of entertainment in the central arena: the Stanley Starlights Majorettes, the Christine Popple School of Dance, and the Normanton Dog Training Club who gave a wonderful demonstration of dog obedience, agility and ingenuity.

Fun at the Gala

The Grand Raffle was a considerable success and raised £1,041.  Many thanks to all those who sold the tickets, and of course, those who bought them.  A list of the prize winners is on display on the church noticeboard.  We are particularly grateful to all the local businesses and individuals who contributed the wonderful prizes including: Gledhill’s butchers, Thatched House pub, Reehal Off-License & News shop, the Co-op store on Lake Lock Road, Red’s hairdressers, Moss Chemist on Lake Lock Road, Kev’s fish shop, and the Lilac Beauty Salon.  Thanks also to John Janusz, the manager of the Co-op supermarket in Outwood who permitted us to sell tickets there.

The whole gala was a wonderfully busy, entertaining and fun-packed afternoon.  A huge thank-you goes to all the organisers, stall-holders, and above all, everyone who came along and supported the event.
