Directed by Roland Emmerich (Independence Day, Godzilla), The Day After Tomorrow sees a new ice age dawning on the Earth, and in double quick time too. Caught in the midst of it all are Jake Gyllenhaal and Dennis Quaid, as a separated son and father, with the former in New York and the latter in Washington. Quaid is a climatologist who sets off to find and rescue his son, across a desperate ice-laden wasteland facing umpteen threats along the way.
The Day After Tomorrow delivers an entertaining slice of science fiction, and some high concept blockbuster fun. You may sit there trying to work out why some things freeze and some things don’t, and some of the scientific explanations given could be described as ‘ropey’ but nevertheless you can’t help but marvel at the terrific special effects (including tornados, floods, general destruction), and the breezy pace of it all. This is a brilliant apocalyptic film for the 21st century, just don’t take it all that seriously…! |
