In Peter Rabbit, the mischievous and adventurous hero who has captivated generations of readers now takes on the starring role of his own contemporary comedy.  In the film, Peter’s feud with Mr  McGregor (Domhnall Gleeson) escalates to greater heights than ever before as their fight to gain control of McGregor’s coveted vegetable garden and the affections of the warm-hearted animal lover who lives next door (Rose Byrne) extends to the Lake District and London. James Corden voices the character of Peter with playful spirit and wild charm, with Margot Robbie, Elizabeth Debicki, and Daisy Ridley performing the voice roles of the triplets, Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cottontail.  Based on the familiar and cherished tale by Beatrix Potter, this was a recent family blockbuster in cinemas.

‘Going in Style’ (2017)

Oscar winners Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine and Alan Arkin team up as lifelong buddies Willie, Joe and Al, who decide to buck retirement and step off the straight-and-narrow for the first time in their lives when their pension fund becomes a corporate casualty, in director Zach Braff’s comedy “Going in Style.”  Desperate to pay the bills and come through for their loved ones, the three risk it all by embarking on a daring bid to knock off the very bank that absconded with their    money.  The film is entertaining and witty, although poignant at times,  and the three main characters are superb as curmudgeonly friends,  united by their loathing for the ‘system’ that has let them down.  Look out for Christopher Lloyd’s (Doc Brown) hilarious cameo role.

Mothering Sunday and Easter 2018

Mothering Sunday—11th March

There is an old Jewish saying: “God could not be everywhere and therefore He made mothers.”  Mother Church, Mother Earth, and our own mothers have all been part of ‘Mothering Sunday’ which has been celebrated in the UK since at least the 1600’s.

In most countries, Mother’s Day is a secular festival celebrated on the 2nd Sunday in May.  In the UK it is celebrated on the 4th Sunday of Lent, on the Christian day of Mothering Sunday.  Join us at St Peter’s on 11th March at 10am for our popular Mothering Sunday family parade service.

Easter Services at St Peter’s church

Palm Sunday, 25th March, 10.30am

Our Palm Sunday service will be a joint service with Mount Road Methodist chapel.  The service will start at 10.30am (note this is later than the   usual St Peter’s start time) at Mount Road chapel.  During the service the congregation will process down the road to St Peter’s church for the remainder of the service.  This is always a lovely family service when we  remember Jesus’ triumphant arrival into Jerusalem.  Please join us!

Maundy Thursday Communion service, 29th March, 7.30pm

Maundy Thursday celebrates the Last Supper that Jesus shared with his apostles.  There will be a communion service at St Peters’ at 7.30pm on Maundy Thursday.

Good Friday Communion service, 30th March, 2pm

On Good Friday there will be an Hour at the Cross service of contemplation and prayer finishing with communion at 3pm, the time at which Jesus died on the cross.  Note that there won’t be a Good Friday Hot Cross Bun service this year.

Easter Sunday, 1st April, 10am

Easter is the most joyful day of the year for  Christians.  Christ has died for our sins.  We are forgiven.  Christ has risen!  We are redeemed!  We can look forward to an eternity in his joy! Hallelujah! Celebrate the joy with us on Easter Sunday morning at 10am

‘Whisky Galore!’ (2017)

Based on the infamous 1941 true story, ‘Whisky Galore!’ is a charming and heart-warming tale of a close-knit Scottish island community who mischievously relieve a sinking cargo ship of cases of whisky during wartime scarcity.  The ensuing merriment is threatened when Excise Men try to spoil the party by catching the crafty locals, red handed, with the bottled loot.  After enduring a dry period, the shipwreck and its amber cargo was like manna from heaven to the islanders, to whom whisky was the very life blood of their island.  Starring Eddie Izzard, James Cosmo, Gregor Fisher and Tim Pigott-Smith, this is a charming and delightful re-make of the original Ealing Studies 1949 film of the same name.

‘Dirty Rotten Scoundrels’ (1988)

When small-time con-artist Freddy Benson (Steve Martin) invades the lucrative Riviera turf of old pro Lawrence Jamieson (Michael Caine), the latter agrees to take him on and tutor him in the methods of fleecing wealthy widows. However, it is not long before Freddy is chafing at the second fiddle role imposed on him by Lawrence, and when a beautiful American heiress (Glenne Headly) arrives in town, the duelling scamsters agree to a contest; whoever gets their hands on her money first forces the loser to leave town for good… The pairing of Caine and Martin was seen as a dream ticket, and even when viewed many years later, it is obvious that the casting was perfect, and they are both on superb form.  All round, it’s a stylish, charming, witty film.

A Matter of Life and Death” (1946)

Briefed by the Ministry of Information to make a film that would foster Anglo-American relations in the post-war period, innovative filmmakers Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, came up with “A Matter Of Life And Death”, an extravagant and extraordinary fantasy in which David Niven stars as a downed pilot who must justify his continuing existence to a heavenly panel of judges, because he made the mistake of falling in love with an American girl (Kim Hunter) when he really should have been dead. National stereotypes are lampooned as the angelic judges squabble over his fate. In a neat reversal of expectations, the Heaven sequences are black and white, while Earth is in techni-colour. Roger Livesey and Raymond Massey lead the fine supporting cast, in what is one of the undoubted jewels of British cinema.
