Last month I wrote about the challenge and gift of prayer,
and mentioned our prayer chain as a way of quickly getting many people
praying about a particular situation. I am pleased to say Pat Hill has
agreed to take on the coordinating role for this ministry. She is
interested in building up the number of people willing to pray, so do
contact her if you are interested, her number is in the magazine or
contact her by
emailing one of
the team here.
I am writing this article the day after we experienced an earthquake
that was big enough to notice and wake people up in the night. It was
awesome to feel the power of nature’s force as whole
buildings shook and the experience was felt pretty well all over the
country.
I realized I was rather complacent at the time assuming that all would
be well. I just sat thinking it was an interesting
experience. It would have been very different if our house
had starting falling down around us. It made me think about
those people who live in countries that when earthquakes come, all is
not well. Houses are destroyed and lives are lost and the
aftermath lasts for years.
This time of Lent and Easter is a time when it is important for us to
be conscious of what is happening around the world, as well as thinking
about our own spiritual health. One of the great needs around
the world is for clean water. As a diocese we are involved in
a project to help people in Mara, Tanzania, learn about the importance
of clean water and develop appropriate skills to enable them to build
and maintain clean water sources. It is an exciting project
working together with the church in Mara and an internationally
recognised charity called Pump Aid. The charity has developed
a pump that can be used in a hand dug well to provide water of much
better quality than comes from a river or open well. Some
training has been given already and the first demonstration wells are
soon to be built. Clean water is such a vital part of healthy living
this is a great project to support in our giving and with our prayers.
