Taken from the July/August 2007 parish magazine.

People keep telling me how time goes quicker as one gets older.  This year seems to be disappearing at an astonishing pace.  We are over half way through the year, exams are over, and many are looking forward to holidays.  Though for those who have taken     exams, this also means waiting for the results.

We have just had the summer gala, which went really well, so I would like to thank all those who came to support us.  We were also greatly blessed by the weather.  The forecast had been gloomy all week, predicting rain all day.  When it came to it, we prayed for good weather and it was dry all day, even though it was raining in places nearby.  We feel it was a real sign of God’s mercy and love: praise Him!
Summer is a good time to slow down and check out how things are going in our lives.  The Bible makes it clear that we are to take responsibility for our environment and care for each other.  This means being alert to what is gong on around and being prepared to act.  We do a little to help some people in Mara, Haiti and our own community.  In this way the world and our community become a better place.

The Bible also teaches the importance of taking time to enjoy our surroundings and our relationships with each other.  Part of the creation story shows God stepping back from creation and seeing that it is good.  This principle of Sabbath, taking time to appreciate the good things in life is a great antidote to the pressure to fill our lives with work and activity.

There will always be things to worry about in life, whether it is exam results, our own health or that of a friend, finances or the future.  We are not called to ignore these things but to bring them to God in prayer.  At the same time though, to take time to rest and enjoy what is good.
