Thank you to all those who
have continued to support the Community Café. We
were very encouraged to receive the Duke of York's award for the
project last year, as a good example of a community
initiative. We have been waiting since then to receive the
award from the Duke of York himself. It seems that this
schedule is very full and after a number of false starts we were
invited to a presentation in Leeds on 28th March where the award
holders would gather, receive the award and get the opportunity to meet
one another and share some good practice ideas.
On
the day, four of us involved with the café, went to Leeds
and set up our stand showing the work of the café, then went
into the auditorium to receive detailed instructions of how the
presentations would work. Then they dropped a bombshell: the
Duke of York was unable to come as he was fog bound in
London. There was an audible gasp of disappointment as we
realised that we would not meet Prince Andrew after all. His
place was very ably taken by the Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire who
did a very good job, but it was not the same.
The café is open each Tuesday and Wednesday and we have been
pleased to welcome some new volunteers. We would like to open
the café more often but would need yet more help to enable
us to do so. If you would like to spend some time in friendly
company, serving others, then please come along and volunteer.
A central part of the Easter story is Jesus giving his life for us when
He died on the cross. His death opened the way for our
forgiveness, healing and eternal life. There is no way that
anyone could have taken His place. No one else could have
done the job. Praise God that He went through with it and gave us the
opportunity for salvation. Do come and join us at one of our
Easter services to celebrate this great gift.
