It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to another of the villages
characters, with the death of Billie Bell on 19th March. Billie was a
real craftsman who enjoyed doing a good job. He has left his
mark
in all sorts of ways. He has been involved in many of the
buildings in Stanley and Wakefield. You can see his work in
the
Cathedral, Clarke Hall, Stanley Church and the Church Centre; in fact
in many of the important local buildings. Billie has also
trained
many people over the years, who are now practising the skills that they
learnt from him. Our thoughts and prayers are with Muriel and
the
family.
We
have heard that the food situation in Mara is very serious. The rains
are late again and already there is wide spread hunger. The diocese has
sent some help already, and we are appealing for help as well. The
children and staff at St. Peter’s school have done a
brilliant
job in raising over £700 for the project.
Thank you to all those who have continued to support the Community
Café. We have been encouraged to receive the Duke
of
York's’ award for the project, as a good example of a
community
initiative. We are still open each Wednesday and have been
pleased to welcome some new volunteers. It would be helpful
to be
able to open more often, so if you would like to spend some time in
friendly company, serving others, please come along and volunteer.
Life and death are the great themes of Easter. There are more
and
more people talking about their spiritual questions. One of
the
roles we can play as a church is to provide a safe place to ask
questions about faith. After Easter we will be starting
another
of our regular ‘Just Looking groups’. If
you would be
interested in coming or know someone who is asking questions, please
encourage them to contact us and join the group.
