magazine.
The end of October has been a difficult time for the church family
here, with the sudden death of Laurence Clarke, our treasurer, on
Saturday 29th October. Our thoughts and prayers are with his
wife
Dawn and the family. There will be more of a tribute to
Laurence
in the December magazine.
Laurence was a great enthusiast about many things. He was
particularly touched by the visit of Rose from Mara, and was delighted
to meet Arthur Mauya, the link officer, when he visited us on 25th
October. Arthur’s visit was an uplifting experience
for us
all.
He
visited St Peter’s school and received a generous cheque from
the
children's harvest gifts of over £300. At a meeting
in the
evening he
also received a cheque for £350 raised by the young people at
St
Peter’s Church.
Arthur explained how the money could be used to make a real difference
to peoples lives. There is a major problem with obtaining
clean
water. St Peter’s has already given money to
provide tanks
to catch rain water, but there is also a need to protect the water
springs. This would cost between £800 to
£900.
Arthur also explained that many children who are orphans will often be
given shelter from their extended families, but there are no resources
for their schooling. £30 would provide a child with
everything
needed for a year at school, including fees and uniforms.
Arthur
said he could be a direct link and give information about sponsored
children who would remain part of the local community. He did
emphasise that once sponsorship started, it would be important for it
to continue for the child’s school career, which could be
from 3
to 7 years.
We hope that a number of people will choose to give to either or both
of these projects and so strengthen our link. If you are
interested please contact me or the church office on 835746. It would
be great for the church to be able to make an extra significant
donation.
